keeps embers from instantly burning a hole in the floor but you STILL ONLY HAVE a few seconds to scoop the coals up or put them out before the heat transfers through the mat and melts the floor anyway.
I keep a bottle of water with a hole poked in the lid handy when I open the stove now and just quickly put them out.

Though a very good idea on paper the reality of the stove mat/tent shield is that it is made of fiberglass and did not handle being folded ot moved around. The fiberglass broke down quickly and gave me many fiberglass splinters which are terrible to deal with. Hanging on the wall is a better option. I would recommend something more sturdy under the wood stove.
